What is the one thing I can do to really set me apart from other job candidates?

Invest in yourself to become informed and curious for a more exhilarating career search and daily life.

Having good conversations is the key to making you memorable. As an informed jobseeker, your conversations will be easier because the topics you can discuss are broad in scope. Knowing what is happening in the world around you will make you more confident.

Continue to be curious about the world. Your interviewer is looking for just that. Someone who wants to understand, know more and keep learning.

With digital news available 24/7 it’s easy to be knowledgeable and aware. You can have these services pushed to you and read them daily:

  • One local newspaper (bonus: it will also contain job notices). Think: Denver Post, Seattle Times
  • One international news source that contains national news, business and cultural coverage. Think NY Times, LA Times.
  • The industry leader if you are working in a specialty field like finance or fashion. Think Wall Street Journal or Women’s Wear Daily.

Digital summaries are free and useful, but paid subscriptions will enable you to get full, well-researched coverage to inform you while stimulating your creativity and sparking ideas for your job search.

The cost will be less than a restaurant lunch or dinner each month and well worth it. Pick one or two good ones.

When you invest in yourself to become more informed, your career search and your life will become more exhilarating.
